"Inthis increasingly global world of information, students must be taught to seekdiverse perspectives, gather and use information ethically, and use socialtools responsibly and safely.“
-AmericanAssociation of School Librarians (Standards for the 21st Century Learner)
Humans are naturally inclined to be social and connect with others. Technology has provided a different way to communicate and in this digital world, our kids are able to communicate, connect, and socialize from just about anywhere. Our students in Austin are powered-up either through BYOD (bring your own device) or through EPISD's student-issued laptops and so, their safety in this digital world is our priority.
At Austin High School, we want our students to understand the complex nature of technology, social media, and the internet. This means that we will teach them to know how to harness the power of technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. However, we also know that this is not a natural event that occurs but instead, digital citizenship is a skill that must be taught to these young minds. We want our students to be prepared for a society full of technology, for them to understand that their actions affect people around them, and for them to know how to use these digital tools appropriately.
The stakes are high because our kids’ technological skills can be greater than their maturity. Having unrestricted access to information and people can result in gaining a wealth of information and experiences. But it can also mean accessing inappropriate content and exposure to risks such as cyberbullying, sexting and online scams.
Austin High has partnered with Common Sense Media to provide resources, tips, videos, and other materials to help parents and teachers keep our students safe in the digital world.
