Meet our New Principal

Dr. John Tanner

Dr. John Tanner was selected as Austin's new principal in late July 2008. Prior to coming to Austin, Dr. Tanner was the principal at Ross Middle School, principal at San Elizario, and teacher at Parkland Middle School, San Elizario Middle School and at Cathedral High.

Dr. Tanner grew up in central El Paso, graduated from Burges High School, Texas Christian University, earned his Master's Degree at the Jesuite School of Theology at Berkeley, California and then earned his Doctorate in Education from the University of Texas at El Paso.

"I hope to bring a passion for education where by all students will aim to get into a four year college." All of Austin's seniors are taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), and all sophomores are taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT).

Other Austin activities include a college night that helped initiate the spark for many seniors, a special day for a select group of 100 students who have accomplished a 90 or better average in their class coupled with excellent attendance, and a freshman induction lighting ceremony where students took the following:

"I promise to uphold the values of Austin High School. I will honor my fellow panthers, live a life that honors the values of my family and the tradition of Austin, and will strive to leave this world better than I found it. Long live Austin High School."
