Austin Sophomore attends Johns Hopkins University
Austin High School’s student Jonathan Ambriz was able to experience college life over the summer. Ambriz attended Johns Hopkins University at Baltimore, Maryland, over a course of six weeks.
February 13, 2009(story by Angelica Stamps) — Ambriz is a sophomore at Austin and is part of the Sandra Day O’Connor Academy; he also has advance classes as part of his curriculum and is part of the wrestling team.
Ambriz’s sister lives in Maryland and he really wanted to visit her over the summer. With today’s economy making that trip was out of reach for Ambriz.
He decided to do research on Google.com for programs that could help pay part for the trip. Many programs came up on his research, one of the programs was held at Hopkins University. Ambriz looked into the program and did more research on what he may need.
Ambriz spoke to Jessica Madrigal who is in charge of the admissions for JHU and made a great impression.
“I guess she really liked me because I was polite,” Ambriz said. “She called me up and helped me with the application.”
The grant paid for three fourths of the classes, the dorm, and food.
“The only thing I had to pay for was the flight and $200 for the rest of the classes,” Ambriz said. “After all it’s not to bad since college is really expensive.”
Ambriz took two classes over the six weeks that include history on human rights and terrorism and visual journalism.
“I decide to take this classes to be able to advance in the academy, also I love history.” Ambriz said.
He was able to experience a new environment.
“I didn’t know what to expect but the environment was really nice, and my roommate was pretty cool.” Ambriz said. “It was different and I got to meet people from all over the world.”
Next summer Ambriz plans on returning to JHU and after high school possible pursuing a career as a detective.
