Skills USA builds leadership

The annual District 1 Skills USA Fall Leadership Conference was held October 3 at Memorial Park.

November 05, 2009(Steven Hill, Pioneer Staff) — El Paso students who competed in Skills USA gathered around for some fun with games and challenges to build confidence and leadership skills.

Sandra Day O’Connor cadets and CCTE students from Austin where amongst those who participated in the conference.
In an activity students where separated into three groups, Red, Blue, and Gold, later to compete against each other. The activities thought them to work as a team and learn leadership skills.
“Leadership is a calling which dwells within everyone,” Junior, Edrick Jones, of the Skills USA Fire Technology Club said. “This conference will help others build and exercise their leadership ability through games and challenges.”
The Leadership Conference was developed not only to teach leadership roles but to bring competitors together and learn about some other programs that exist in other schools.
“It’s about meeting those kinds of kids that have the same interests and having a good time doing it.” Chief Joseph Savage, Fire Technology Instructor and Skills USA advisor said.
“It’s over all a way to network with positive students from all over El Paso.” Jones said.
These young leaders will meet once again in the Skills USA district competition held in February 2010.
